Scrolling a cannabis menu and asking yourself “what is ‘hash’?” You’re in good company. It’s among the oldest cannabis products worldwide and one of the most commonly misunderstood. Here’s a straightforward explanation.

So what is it?
Hash (short for hashish) is produced by gathering the plant’s resin glands — trichomes — and compressing them into a solid or semi-solid form. Trichomes are the tiny, sticky, crystal-like bits that hold most of the THC, CBD and terpenes. Remove the leafy material and you end up with something far more concentrated than flower.
Quick note: “weed hash” and “THC hash” mean the same thing. It’s just different search terms people use.
Hash vs flower 🌱
🌿 Flower: typically around 15–28% THC, dry and fibrous, suited for beginners and everyday use
🟤 Hash: frequently 40–70% THC or higher, can be pliable or crumbly, better for users with some experience
Always check the label for the exact THC and CBD.
Meet the family
🔹 Pressed hash: kief or resin pressed into blocks. Classic and earthy
🔹 Dry sift: passed through fine mesh. Powdery to crumbly
🔹 Bubble hash: produced with ice water and mesh bags, without solvents. Top grades are called “full melt”
🔹 Charas: hand-rubbed from live plants. Soft, fragrant and rare
🔹 Hash rosin: hash pressed with heat. Sap-like, smooth and flavourful
🔹 Black hash: heavily pressed or aged. Deep, strong flavour
Bonus: kief is the golden powder in your grinder’s catcher, and it’s the raw material for pressed hash.
What does it taste like? 👃
Generally more intense than flower: earthy, woody, spicy, sweet or floral, sometimes with pine, citrus or incense notes. Pressed hash leans deep and musky, while fresh ice-water hash tends to be brighter and fruitier.
How people use it
🚬 Crumbled into a joint or bowl with flower. It burns more evenly that way, and it’s the most beginner-friendly option
💨 In a vaporizer made for concentrates
🔥 Dabbing, which is strong and fast, so it’s for experienced users only
Start low, go slow ⚠️
Begin with a piece about the size of a grain of rice, or smaller. When smoked or vaped, effects usually show up within minutes and last 1–3 hours. Wait before taking more. Avoid alcohol, stay somewhere comfortable, and never drive.
Myth-busting 🧠
❌ “Darker hash is always stronger.” Colour doesn’t predict potency. Lab results do.
❌ “Hash is always made with chemicals.” Most hash is solventless.
❌ “It’s only for experts.” Beginners can try tiny amounts and be patient.
Keep it fresh
Store it airtight, cool and dark, away from food, and locked up away from kids and pets.
Canada notes 🇨🇦
Hash is legal when it comes from a licensed producer and is sold through an authorized retailer. Concentrates count toward the 30 g public possession limit at a conversion ratio, so you can carry much less hash than flower. Never take cannabis across the border.
